About the Global Alliance for Tax Justice



The Global Alliance for Tax Justice (GATJ) is a South-led global coalition in the tax justice movement. Together we work for a world where progressive and redistributive tax policies counteract inequalities within and between countries, and generate the public funding needed to ensure essential services and human rights. Created in 2013, GATJ comprises regional tax justice networks in Asia (Tax & Fiscal Justice Asia), Africa (Tax Justice Network Africa), Latin America (Red de Justicia Fiscal de América Latina y el Caribe), Europe (Tax Justice-Europe) and North America (Canadians for Tax Fairness & FACT Coalition), collectively representing hundreds of organisations.



About the position



GATJ is seeking a communications officer to support the development and implementation of strategies to increase the visibility of the alliance and its campaigns through strategic storytelling and media outreach. This is a full-time position hosted by Canadians for Tax Fairness.

Compensation will be communicated to shortlisted candidates and will be discussed based on candidates’ geographical location and availability. More detailed information will be shared during the interviews.



Duties and responsibilities of the consultant (Communications Officer)

  • Advance the aims of the Global Alliance for Tax Justice (GATJ), a network of regional coalitions in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America.
  • To contribute to the communications and campaign aspects of the GATJ’s work for strategic policy change in international tax matters. The GATJ works with governments, bilateral and multilateral institutions, civil society, the private sector and faith-based institutions through campaign and communications initiatives.
  • The post holder is responsible for managing her/his work within the terms of this contract. The post holder will work closely with members of the GATJ Coordination Committee and others, requiring teamwork skills and ability to work in a multicultural setting.
  • Support the development and implementation of communication strategies for the global campaigns and projects
  • Create and publish visual and textual content for the communications channels with the support of the policy advocacy team
  • Liaise with the communications teams in the GATJ’s regional networks and partners to write stories that are relevant to the alliance
  • Support the media relations work by updating media lists, drafting and sending out press releases, and following up with journalists
  • Support the creation and design of institutional materials
  • Support the management of suppliers related to communications
  • Monitor communications performance and create reports on a regular basis

Key responsibilities

  • Build the communications strategic plan.
  • Create and translate content for GATJ communications channels (website, social media, newsletter, press release) 
  • Build and strengthen relationship with members, partners and other stakeholders.
  • Engage with key reporters and media outlets, identify media opportunities and monitor media coverage in order to increase GATJ’s public profile.
  • Monitor communications performance and provide improvement insights.
  • Liaise with the Secretariat and Coordination Committee to set the campaigns’ objectives and form a project team to support the campaign roll out.
  • Develop the activities plan, provide the project team with clear guidelines, divide up tasks and coordinate the campaigns execution.
  • Evaluate the campaigns performance and write a final report on the outcomes.
  • Contribute to daily and weekly content updates for GATJ social media channels and websites.
  • Liaise with the GATJ regional network members.
  • Provide communications and strategic campaign support for GATJ campaigns and mobilizations, and related Global Weeks of Action, trainings, events and international forums.
  • Engage with key reporters and media outlets, identify media opportunities and monitor media coverage in order to increase GATJ’s public profile.
  • Contribute to producing regular electronic newsletters and action alerts.
  • Translate, edit, proofread and format campaign, policy, training and web materials as needed.

Required Skills

  • 5+ years of experience in communications and media relations
  • Experience in campaigns communications within the civil society space is highly desirable
  • Solid copywriting skills and ability to identify opportunities to write stories that could help advance the organisation’s advocacy agenda
  • Experience in designing visual pieces and editing videos
  • Good understanding of social media strategies
  • Knowledge of Google Workspace and platforms relevant to communications, such as Wordpress, Meltwater, Mailchimp, Canva, Analytics
  • Good interpersonal skills, being able to build and strengthen relationships with members and key stakeholders of the organisation
  • Proven attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Team player with ability to work independently and flexibility to cope with change
  • Fluent in English. Proficiency in other UN languages are a plus (French and/or Spanish as preferred languages)

Reporting lines

The post holder will report to GATJ’s the Executive Coordinator in work related matters and to the

Executive Director of Canadians for Tax Fairness in matters related to employment and

organisation of day-to-day work.



Compensation Compensation: This is a full-time position with a salary range of $55,000 -

$68,000 based on experience.



Terms: There will be a three-month probationary period.

Location: Staff work remotely with regular online meetings.
