When Canadians for Tax Fairness launched our campaign against offshore
tax evasion last fall, many were skeptical anything could be achieved.
Some people said the banks,
corporations and wealthy tax evaders would never be held accountable. A lot of people said we
were wasting our time.
Today we have an international
Tax Haven Action Plan to show them.
But we'd be vain to take much credit. You were the reason it happened.
Social media and digital
technologies are transforming politics — if you’re reading this, you’re a part
of that transformation whether you realize it or not. When you follow us on
Facebook and Twitter, when you 'like', 'share' or 'retweet' our posts, when you answer
the call to send politicians a message, you’re helping build a community that’s actively shaping public discourse and the decisions that
emerge from that dialogue.
Last week, we told you Stephen Harper was
planning to block the G8 Tax Haven Action Plan. When thousands of you answered our call to send Harper a message, that display of unanimity was enough to bring Canada on board.
But as great as that might feel, the real victory of our campaign is we now know who we are and what we can achieve.
Canadians for Tax Fairness is building a national community to restore balance to a tax debate that's been run amok by old ideas that don't work and don't make a whole lot of sense to most of us.
We’re gearing up to launch a new
campaign targeting the big tax loopholes. What we need to ask you now is to get more involved.
We can’t do anything unless our community of supporters takes a leading role. This can come in many shapes and sizes:
- You can follow us on Facebook & Twitter and help share our message.
- You can contact us about organizing group events in your community.
- You can pick up a copy of our new book The Great Revenue Robbery and dazzle young and old alike at your next family barbecue or vegan potluck with your expert knowledge of Canada's tax system.
But
the best way to help us out would be to invest in the long-term sustainability
of Canadians for Tax Fairness by
making a contribution.
You may not know this, but we are only a staff of 3 working on a shoestring budget, relying on research and resources provided by our network of partners and supporters. Investing in us gives us the ability to allocate resources where they're needed so we can do all the important behind-the-scenes work that gets research and information out to the public and powers our community to refocus Canada's tax debate on the issues that really matter.
You made this campaign a huge
success.
Now let’s do it again.
Thank you for all of your support.
